There are many resources
online claiming to have real photos of the supernatural. This
is an attempt to find natural occurrences that might create
or resemble a supposed ghostly picture. Of course this is not
to say that no ghost photos are real, but a good dose of skepticism
never hurts. You can click on some of the photos for a larger
version.
Mists
Though this photo was taken outside a supposedly haunted
location, making it all the more believable, it is not a ghost.
It was a cold night and one member of the LIOddities staff
decided to test the mist theory by exhaling while taking the
picture. This is the result.
Upon showing this photo to one person they reported seeing
a skull with horns in the image. This is similar to the Rorschach
test. A mist can look like almost anything. Below this photo
is another one with the head and horns supposedly outlined.
Again this was just accidental and this photo is 100% fake.
Take care to be objective when analyzing photos.
To the right are some
more breath-caused mist photos. These were completely staged
but yet look similar to some photos seen on the web. Note the
different colors present in the mist. This is just light reacting
differently due to distance and the misty breath.
Orbs are probably the
most commonly reported ghost picture so I am going to spend
a little more time here. You can click on the pictures to see
a larger version. These orbs were completely staged. Perhaps
someday we will be able to classify the origins of orb photos
with accuracy just by looking at the patterns. I encourage you
to make your own fake orb photos and analyze them.
These were taken with
a digital camera looking into the rain. Note the blue tinge
around the edges.
This was some dust spread
about but with the flash at half power. Compared to the others,
you get more orbs with a brighter flash.
In the next series of
photos we used and old broom to fling dust all over. You can
actually see the number of orbs increase and then decrease as
the dust settled. Any one of these orbs looks very similar if
not identical to other ghost photos. Again you may click on
the photo for a larger view.

Vortexes
Often described
as a shaft or wand darting across a photo. One good way
to get a glowing vortex is to accidentally take a photo
with your camera strap hanging over the lens. Because
the object is so close the lens does not focus on it and
it can be hard to identify. This has happened to many
people including myself .These 2 pics were taken with
a piece of string. Though it still retains some string-like
qualities it also begins to look like a vortex. I plan
on continuing to experiment so better pictures may be
coming.
