Northport Traction Company

The Northport LIRR depot is located in East Northport. This being a considerable distance south of the village, a trolley was used to deliver commuters from the station into town. Out of all the trolleys on LI this one has the most track still showing.

Here we see the clearly visible track along Main Street.

This is the blueprint of the tracks at the Northport depot while the trolley was still there. The building at the far west end is a LIRR freight house. From here freight and baggage could be moved on the trolley with a special baggage car, shown right.
With these two photos we can see much has changed. Not even the depot building is the same. Also notice that the older picture shows the trolley operating in spite of the abundance of cars. This trolley remained operational until 1924.
Northport Village is a good distance from the nearest train station. With the trolley gone walking would be the only option for someone without a car.
The rail car diner seen right was actually moved to this location on the trolley tracks. The photo below shows where the trolley turned into the trolley barn, now a park. Notice the map above, it shows this as well.

This was one of the trolley stop benches and can now be seen at the Northport Historical Society.
