Debunked

Other than it being abandoned, there is nothing of this site that deserves the name Satan's Trails. So the new name of this page is "Satan's Trails Debunked". LI Oddities thinks it is an oddity all of its own that such a name would be in circulation. We actually didn't coin the name as it can be found on other message boards belonging to other sites.

Located behind the Congregational Church in Mt. Sinai. The church itself is from the 18th century and is beautiful and quaint. Go around the back past the old cemetery and there's a different story completely. There exists a series of trails that have a couple of abandoned houses. The area is listed as a Suffolk County park but a sign reads "No unauthorized use allowed". The sign also states the park closes at 4pm. So, I wouldn't advise going at night. Be thoughtful and respectful as there aren't many places like this left to explore and we want to keep them as long as we can. Anybody with further info, stories or pics either post or send them please.

UPDATE: After a little bit of investigation I have found out that the houses were all part of the Chandler Estate. This estate lasted all the way until the 1990s. The Chandler family sold the property to Suffolk County in the late 1990s and made it into a park of sorts. In it's heyday Marilyn Monroe stayed there.

UPDATE 9/19/03 Upon talking with some of the residents who lived there and having another post a message, it is obvious that this place is undeserving of the name "Satan's Trails". This name was not coined by www.lioddities.com. The place was the onetime Chandler estate which was later turned into an apartment house by Mrs. Chandler. Mrs. Chandler was a kindly person and a landlady anybody would want to rent from. Marilyn Monroe did actually live in one of the buildings that is not there anymore. LI Oddities is trying to get photos of this momentous period of time and will post them here when we do. I also made some changes to the main story above to better reflect the facts.

UPDATE: 7/31/03 New pictures are in. These pictures make it very clear that this place was once used as an apartment complex because there are numbers on some doors off the main hallway and the place has many little kitchens. We are still looking for more info so if you lived there or know anything contact us.

This is the first abandoned structure on approach on the trail from the old church.
Yet another lovely jewel in this abandoned treasure chest of a neighborhood. When I find out the history behind these houses I will post it here and in the zine.
Large fireplace in the central room. There is a big hole in the floor in front of it.

Above: Back entrance to top left house is a burnt up boiler room with this archaic heating unit.

Left: Tallest of the houses. Metal fire escape and fire extinguisher mounts inside suggests maybe it was used by an institution of some sort.

Don't worry, it's just paint
Looking down the hallway of the middle floor of the house above.
Very old and rotted wooden shack in the woods near the houses.
Bad shape
Behind one of the houses lies this peculiar wall.. It's about 8 feet tall and twice that in width. Who knows why it was built there? Could it once have been part of something else? This is what is found on the other side of the wall.
This place had about a dozen kitchens, most likely because it's an apartment.
Yet another kitchen.
What broke that tank?
Second fireplace wasn't far from the larger one.
Could this be the one and only Mary from the Mary's grave legend?
Mary's room.
Weird thing inside Mary's room.
Kitchens everywhere.
Third and top floor room.
Guess?
Door.
Hall.
Dishes still left in this apartment.
An above-ground basement.
Not shown here, this basement had a little stage to the back of it.
Little handprints located behind the stage.
Who is that? Who drew this? Found backstage.
Hanging skeleton on wall behind stage.
Backstage bathroom complete with painted furniture.
