Star Gazer

This unofficial gateway to the Hamptons sits north of Sunrise Highway on County Route 111. The colossal deer gazing at the stars was originally meant to straddle the wide entrance of the Animal Rescue Fund near East Hampton’s airport.

The Animal Rescue Fund backed out due to the pressure from the town and the possibility of interfering with the airport. The six story wood, stucco, and steel structure was homeless until a local farmer allowed Linda Scott, the artist, to place the curious creature on his plot of land. Ever since it was placed there in 1991 it has marked proximity to the Hampton’s for millions of summer travelers.
