The Great Sphinx of Bayport

That's right folks, Egypt isn't
the only place with a sphinx. We have one right here on Long Island
too. This icon can be seen on the south side of route 27A in Bayport.
It's right in front of the Fontana Cement Co., where it has been since
it was moved there in 1974. While not dating back quite as far as
its bigger cousin, it does have a long history. It was originally
part of the Anchorage Inn in Blue Point. The Anchorage was founded
in 1897 by Irish immigrant Will Graham. It was passed many times by
the Suffolk Traction Company's trolley, which passed through Blue
Point from 1911 to 1919. |

Anchorage Inn. Note the trolley tracks.
That tells us that this picture was taken sometime between 1911 and
1919. |
