Who would ever think that we would be telling you about a McDonalds' restaurant? But, this is no ordinary Mickey Dees. In fact, there is only one other even remotely similar in the entire country. We have all heard the term "McMansion", these cookie cutter large homes that all look the same. This is the reverse, a McDonalds made out of mansion. In the late 1980s McDonalds bought a former farmhouse. Their idea was to tear it down and build yet another McDonalds. The estate they wanted to build on was a former farmhouse for the Denton Family, decedents of a founding family of Hempstead.
The community felt the site was historic and shouldn't be torn down. In 1988, town officials granted the farmhouse historic landmark status. Rather than give up on the idea, McDonalds decided to renovate the structure into one of its restaurants. This wasn't such a farfetched idea. After all, the house has been a restaurant since 1930. First it was the Charred Oak Manor, and then it became Dallas Ribs. The plan was approved, and McDonalds number 12000 was open for business in 1991. So, if you are in New Hyde Park and having a Big Mac attack, you can dine in an 1875 farmhouse. By the way, the only other one of its kind is in Freeport, Maine.
