This is one ruin that is unique in that it never served its purpose. The Shoreham Nuclear Plant was conceived in 1965 and built in 1973. After series of public relation nightmares, it’s fate was sealed in 1989, when it was decided not to utilize the plant.
The meltdowns at 3-mile Island and Chernobyl, as well as LILCO’s handling of the hurricane Gloria aftermath made many Long Islanders weary of the plants opening. Protests were formed and the issue was kept alive. In the end the plant cost $6 BILLION, accounting for ½ of the Long Island Power Authority’s dept.
Today the plant sits abandoned in a residential community, making it stick out like a sore thumb. It’s radioactive fuel removed, and its turbines soled, the rest is still visible a monument to an failure of epic proportions.
