Suffolk County once had its own horse race track that was in operation from 1977 until 1988. The horses no longer race around there, but there are still some remnants to be found. The road along the expressway that served the track was going to be County Road 102 and is still there, though blocked off to automobile traffic. The remnants of the track itself can also be found, as well as the huge parking lot for fans and betters. If you didn't know what this once was, you would be perplexed as to why such a large paved parking lot exists in the middle of the pine barrens with nothing else around. You can also see the track watchtower sticking up several stories. It looks almost like a fire watchtower for the forest to the east of it, but upon further investigation you can see the windows only overlook the former track.
