| One day I got a letter
from somebody who read about LIO in Newsday. They went on to
explain that they used to work in a Massapequa supermarket.
While working there everyone would always talk about a street
and truck hidden underground.
Well, Laura and myself hopped right in the car and drove
there. We were skeptical about the story and thought even
if it were true our chances of seeing it would be slim to
nil.
We dashed into the store and right to the department we were
told had a stairway to the hidden underbelly. We asked the
employee manning the counter. She looked genuinely unaware
of what we were talking about. We began to leave in disappointment.
Running into another employee we figured, "why not."
This employee seemed a little bit more aware there was something
underground. He told us the name of a manager who would know.
We had the manager paged at the courtesy counter, and asked
him about it.
"What do you want to know about it," was his response.
To which my first question was, "Can we see it?"
He led us down the stairs into an ordinary looking basement.
Then opened an innocuous looking door.
There was almost no light on the other side of the door and
it took my eyes a few seconds to adjust. As they adjusted
I could make out curbs and a street all surrounded with concrete.
There were doorways into the basements of other stores and
a turn in the roadway.
Once around the turn the manager clicked on a light, illuminating
a large underground room. There it was, the truck, sitting
under one of the few working lights. It was a vintage Ford
Pickup.
The manager explained the entire area was originally a very
old market of some sort. The stores had apparently built on
top of it leaving the truck inside.
Other rumors I have heard is that the roadway was the original
Merrick Road and it may have even been Nassau Counties first
market. If anyone has any info please email me at editor@lioddities.com.
