Edgewood is the least known of the state
mental hospitals. This is probably because of its proximity and ties
with Pilgrim State. Edgewood was run by the federal government for
the military for a while and later was managed by Pilgrim before permanently
closing in 1971. There used to be a huge behemoth of a building visible
from Commack road that was torn down in 1989. It also had its own
rail spur, tunnel system and power plant just like its siblings. Now
it's all gone. It was turned into a state nature preserve and requires
a permit to explore. All that remains is a rail spur in the middle
of the woods. If you have any experiences exploring this place when
it was abandoned please contact us here. Any more info will be greatly
appreciated and land you a free magazine. |
