Long Islands duck industry
started in 1873 with 9 peeking ducks from China. It since
grew to have the largest duck farm the world over. That
farm was destroyed in hurricane of 1938.
Concerns over pollution
from duck wastes and Long Island's suburban sprawl led
to the waning of this once mighty industry.
The Gallo Duck Farm was
a family run poultry farm situated on LI's south shore.
Alot of it is now owned by Suffolk County and being kept
for open space. Many remnants of this farm exist today,
such as: the slaughter house, many duck houses, the duck
sewage treatment house, a barn, a greenhouse and a few
other structures.
Under the US Clean Air
and Water Act the Army Corp of engineers plans on cleaning
the site up in the future. It is uncertain weather that
would include tearing down the buildings.
