![]() The hallways of this hospital lie quiet and littered with debris. Brunswick Hospital was a small community facility located in Amityville. It served the communities of the south shores of the Nassau/Suffolk border. Many who sought treatment at Brunswick were elderly and couldn’t drive. The hospital shut its doors in 2005, but they didn’t stay closed for long. Two hundred evacuees were given shelter in the shuttered facility in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The operating rooms lie empty, the lighting and O.R. tables having been removed. Nurse’s stations and hospital rooms are devoid of their former positions. Amazingly, some areas still have stuff left behind. One nursing station still has its computers. An entire place being emptied can be understood easily as the result of employees ordered to remove everything. A place with all its former belongings, though mysterious and interesting, is understandable; everyone just got up and left, without anyone looking back. However, what causes a place to leave some items scattered about, but remove others. Was that one nurse’s station simply overlooked by those cleaning the place out? We’ll never know. |
